British tank manufacturer Vickers Defense Systems began developing a successor to the Challenger 1 on its own initiative in 1986.
Eventually the tank was accepted by the British Ministry of Defence and in June 1991 it placed a £520 million order for 140 vehicles Production began in 1993 and the tanks in the first batch were delivered in July 1994, replacing the Challenger 1.
The Challenger 2 main battle tank officially entered service with the British Army in June 1998 and the last of the 386 tanks was delivered in April 2002.
The tanks saw active service in the conflicts in Bosnia, Kosovo and the 2003 Gulf War. Typical operational areas were also the training areas in Northern Germany, where tank regiments of the British Army Germany were stationed in Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia - The last of these regiments, the "Queen's Royal Hussars" left their base in Sennelager in 2018 to return to the UK.
Today, 227 Challenger 2 main battle tanks remain in service with the British Army.
