It was equipped with a water-cooled MB 838 CaM 500 multi-fuel engine.
The Leopard 1 A3 had all the improvements of the Leopard 1 A2, but with a new welded turret with bulkhead armor and a wedge-shaped gun mantlet.
The turret's rear storage box was integrated into the contour of the turret.
The loader's periscope was movable in elevation and azimuth. The Leopard 1 A4 had the same turret as the Leopard 1 A3, but had an integrated fire control system that improved the tank's combat effectiveness and also offered a much higher hit probability.
Due to its extraordinary reliability and outstanding tactical mobility, the Leopard 1 main battle tank became standard equipment for European armed forces and was in service in over a dozen countries around the world.
