It is equipped with a 120 mm smoothbore gun and an advanced fire control system called BAZ (glaring flash).
It was used in the Lebanon War of 2006, Operation Cast Lead in Gaza in the winter of 2009, Operation Protective Edge in the summer of 2014, and many other security operations along the Israeli border.
In order to enable the Merkava Mk.3D to be used in the Gaza Strip and southern Lebanon in counter-terrorism and LIC (Low Intensity Conflict) roles, additional features were added to the front of the turret and armor on both sides, such as a more advanced armor element, front and rear tow horns for recovery, and additional armor under the hull as well as protection for sights and lighting.
