The Leopard 1, which entered service in the mid-1960s, formed the backbone of the Federal Republic of Germany's armored forces and several NATO forces during the Cold War era.
The Leopard's task was to counter the huge masses of tanks that could be deployed by the Warsaw Pact troops.
It was armed with the proven 105mm L7 cannon, which could use various types of ammunition.
The A5 version represents a significant improvement as it is equipped with a modified turret that can accommodate the new computer-controlled target detection and fire control systems.
Additionally, additional armor made of composite polycarbonate was added, which significantly increases protection and resistance to hits.
