The Merkava series is a series of main battle tanks used by the Israel Defense Forces and forms the backbone of the IDF's armored corps. The tank began development in 1970 and the Merkava Mark 1 was officially introduced into service in 1979.
Dr Merkava Mark I is the original design of the series, and was designed for mass production.
The Mark I weighed 63 tons and had a 908 hp diesel engine with a power-to-weight ratio of 14 hp/ton. It was armed with the 105 mm M64 L71A cannon, two 7.62 mm machine guns for anti-infantry use and an externally mounted 60 mm mortar.
