The tank is a Slovak upgrade of the T-72M1 tanks built under license in the former Czechoslovakia.
The Moderna has been fitted with French thermal sights, new ERA packages and new APFSDS.
It is also fitted with a secondary 30 mm machine gun identical to the gun on the BMP-2, giving it additional firepower and operational capabilities compared to its counterparts in the T-72 family.
Development was completed, but without a contract to modernise the tank fleet.
