Production of the T-55 began in 1958 as tensions between Western countries and the Soviet Union increased.
It was easy to produce and was characterised by a sloping nose, a compact hull and a hemispherical turret.
In addition, the T-55 was well armed with a 100mm cannon.
In the early 1960s, the T-55A was developed with an anti-radiation inner liner and an anti-radiation commander's cupola cover.
The T-55 and T-55A were also built under licence by Czechoslovakia and Poland, and some received various upgraded equipment, resulting in numerous sub-types.
Production of the T-55 continued until the late 1970s, equipping the armies of over 40 countries. It was used in various wars such as the wars in the Middle East and the Gulf War.
