The M88 armored recovery vehicle was based on the chassis and parts of the M48 Patton and M60 tanks.
The original M88 was introduced in 1961 and the M88A1 in 1977.
From 1962, the Bundeswehr received125 vehicles.
From 1985, the vehicles of the Bundeswehr were given a diesel engine (M88 A1) and a more powerful recovery gear.
