It was developed specifically in response to the Soviet IS-3 tank and was intended as a partner for the British Army's Centurion (armed with a smaller 20 pdr gun) to provide long range anti-tank capability.
From 1955 to 1959, a total of 20 Conqueror Mk.I and 165 Conqueror Mk.II tanks were produced and assigned to the armoured regiments stationed in Germany.
A disadvantage was their weight of 66 tonnes, which impaired their speed and was too heavy for many bridges.
