One result was the R35 light tank, which used a rolled steel lower hull and a three-piece cast upper hull and was armed with a short-barreled 37mm gun.
It had a crew of two.
When hostilities broke out with Nazi Germany in May 1940, the R35 was right at the front.
While its armour proved reliable, the 37mm gun was not enough to penetrate German armour.
The fall of France in June 1940 saw production of the R35 end at around 1600 units produced.
