In November 1941, the Army requested a vehicle with a cannon in a fully rotating turret, after earlier models had been criticized as being too poorly designed.
The prototype M10 was developed in early 1942 and delivered in April of that year.
After requested changes to the hull and turret, the modified version was prepared for production in June 1943 and appeared as the "3-inch Gun Motor Carriage M10".
It carried a 3'' (76.2 mm) M7 gun in a rotating turret on a modified M4A2 Sherman hull.
Production ran from September 1942 to December 1943.
The M10 was numerically the most significant US tank destroyer of World War II.
It combined thin but angled armor with the reliable drive train of the M4 Sherman and a reasonably effective anti-tank weapon mounted in an open-topped turret.
Despite becoming obsolete in the face of more powerful German tanks such as the Panther, and stronger and better-designed types being introduced as a replacement, the M10 remained in service until the end of the war.
