In the design phase of the L40, the original armoured turret of the L6/40 was removed and the 47/32 Mod.1935 anti-tank gun was installed in the open casemate, similar to the "M" series tanks.
The Semovente was distinguished by its small size, the plate and rivet armour typical of Italian production of the time, and a crew of only two men.
Although its battlefield performance was clearly inadequate in the face of the enemy threat, it continued to be used by Italian forces in Libya, Tunisia and also in the war at home during the Second World War.
After the Armistice, some units were used for secondary military duties with the Italian Auxiliary Forces, the Wehrmacht and the Luftwaffe.
