One solution was the Flakpanzer IV/3.7 cm Flak, a vehicle the Germans called “Ostwind”.
In August 1944 an order was placed for 100 Ostwind, this vehicle having a more powerful 3.7cm FlaK43 mounted in a hexagonal turret.
The turret was open at the top to allow smoke to escape.
It could be rotated 360° and the rapid-fire gun could be used with great destructive effect against air and ground targets.
A crew of six operated the 25-ton Ostwind, and a total of 43 of these vehicles were built, mostly on converted Panzer IV chassis.
