The Hotchkiss H39 was a French tank from the late 1930s. It was equipped with a 3.7 cm L/33 cannon and its engine produced 120 hp (88.3 kW). During the French campaign, many of these tanks were captured undamaged, modified and taken over into the Wehrmacht. Some had their turrets removed and a new superstructure fitted with the German 7.5 cm Pak 40. These vehicles were then designated 7.5cm PaK40(SF) on Geschützwagen 39(F) or Marder I. They were used after the Allies landed in Normandy.
