The conceptual idea behind this weapon system was a self-propelled gun carriage for the powerful but heavy 8.8 cm anti-tank gun, as the towed versions of this weapon were too unwieldy for the crews to move around easily.
Ardelt and Rheinmetall jointly built the first prototype and tests were carried out with this Ardelt I.
The vehicle's engine was mounted at the front of the hull, which allowed the main armament - an 8.8 cm L/71 gun - to be mounted at the rear.
A 38(t) hull with four rollers per side was used.
An improved prototype (Ardelt II) was later produced by Ardelt and Krupp, but the end of the war prevented the start of series production.
