The Elefant heavy tank destroyer was armed with a powerful 8.8cm L/71 gun that could take out T-34 tanks at a range of 2000 metres.
The vehicle was protected by armour up to 200mm thick and equipped with advanced features such as a hybrid drive.
It had its roots in the Porsche-designed Ferdinand, which was first used in combat during the Battle of Kursk in 1943.
Lessons learned from this battle led to modifications, including the addition of a commander's cupola, a machine gun for infantry defence and better tracks.
The improved vehicles were given the new designation Elefant in February 1944.
Elefants were used in Italy and on the Eastern Front, where they fought against the Allied forces until the last battles of the war
