As the name suggests, this vehicle was based on a Panzer IV hull (specifically an Ausf.J) and was manufactured by Alkett as an intermediate design.
From August 1944 to March 1945, a total of 278 tank destroyers were produced simultaneously with the more common Jagdpanzer IV/70(V).
A long-barreled 7.5 cm PaK 42 gun was mounted in the casemate structure.
Due to the nose-heavy nature of the vehicle, the first four rollers had to be fitted with steel rims, while the vertical undersides of the body visually distinguish this type from the Jagdpanzer IV/70(V).
