The first encounters with the T-34 in the USSR in 1941 were a shock for the invading German troops, who until then had been very successful with their tank forces.
Their answer to this was the Panther, which was first used in 1943.
It featured sloping armour, a powerful Maybach engine and a powerful 7.5cm gun - all in all an impressive combination of firepower, mobility and survivability that proved to be a boon for the German forces and a problem for the Allies.
