The first encounters with the T-34 in the USSR in 1941 were a shock for the invading German troops, who until then had been very successful with their tank forces.
Their response was the Panther, which was first used in 1943.
The G version followed the Panther D and A versions.
Making its debut in March 1944, it featured sloping armour, a powerful 700hp Maybach HL-230 engine and a powerful 7.5cm gun - all in all an impressive combination of firepower, mobility and survivability that proved a boon to German forces and a problem for the Allies.
