The vehicle was developed in a hurry after the German army unexpectedly encountered such overwhelming enemies as the T34 and the KV-1 during its invasion of the Soviet Union.
The newly developed Geschützwagen III/IV served as a carrier vehicle for the cannon, which was able to destroy enemy tanks from a long distance.
Thanks to its relatively low weight of 24 tons, it reached a top speed of 42 km/h.
While the operation began in July 1943 under the name Hornisse, from January of the following year it was given the new name Nashorn, allegedly on Hitler's orders.
By March 1945, 439 examples had been produced and were used on both the Eastern and Western Fronts.
