Developed for infantry support in World War II, the Sturmpanzer IV combined the proven Panzer IV chassis with a casemate with 100 mm front and 50 mm side armor and a powerful 15 cm gun capable of penetrating 160 mm of 30 degree armor from 5 km away.
Its variants can be broadly divided into early, medium, and late production, the latter being the most numerous with 160 produced between May 1944 and March 1945.
Assessments by crews of earlier Brummbärs had led to a new design of the fighting compartment and commander's cupola, and to the partial use of steel wheels.
The Brummbär fought on the Eastern Front and in Italy.
