Built around the chassis of the Austin K30 light truck, the casualty compartment was developed in conjunction with the Royal Army Medical Corps and as a result proved highly functional.
The K2/Y could carry either four stretchers or ten seated casualties. One of the main reasons for the K2/Y's success was that it was so robust and reliable, and required a minimum of maintenance - an ambulance should always be ready when you need it.
The rear cabin was typically made of painted canvas on a wooden frame, with the highly visible red cross on a white disc prominently positioned on all sides to ensure that the vehicle's occupants did not come under fire.
The Austin K2/Y was an extremely popular vehicle with British, Commonwealth and American troops.
With over 13,000 built, this would be a familiar sight on the battlefields of the world.
