In 1938, BMW and Zündapp were commissioned to start a joint development project based on a specific request from the German Wehrmacht, which would ensure the greatest possible number of common components in order to optimize maintenance activities and spare parts logistics.
The prototypes were launched in 1940 and production began in early 1941.
