The “Camionetta Desertica modello 42 Sahariana” was developed for the Italian Royal Army based on the chassis and mechanics of the reliable AB 41 armored car. During operations on the African front, the need arose for a reconnaissance vehicle particularly suitable for desert conditions, where the sandy terrain required special features that were not available on the available vehicles. Thanks to its low sides and large wheels, the “Sahariana” was ideal for reconnaissance operations and quick raids into enemy territory. Its good range increased the possibility of using the vehicle for long-range operations. The armament could vary depending on the model and consisted of the Breda 20/65 Mod. 1935 machine gun, the powerful 47/32 anti-tank gun or the Solothurn anti-tank rifle in 20 mm caliber.
