Already in the 1930s the Sd.Kfz. 221 as a replacement for the Sd.Kfz. 13/14 eagle developed. Based on the Horch 801 chassis, it had a lightly armored body with a small rotating turret for a machine gun. A gasoline engine with 75 hp allowed speeds of up to 80 km/h. Initially these vehicles were used in reconnaissance platoons, but as both armor and armament proved to be too weak, they were used more as liaison vehicles between command posts.
