The Sd.Kfz 247/A was finally built by Krupp in 1937 on the chassis of the 6-wheeled truck Krupp Protze.
It had an air-cooled four-cylinder Krupp petrol engine with 65 hp, a top speed of 70 km/h and an armor thickness of between 6 and 8 mm, which was sufficient to protect against light weapons fire and shrapnel. It had a payload of 5.1 t and a maximum range of 350 km.
The Sd.Kfz.247/A was originally designed as a command vehicle for the officers of mobile reconnaissance units, but did not have radios as standard equipment and had no fixed armament.
In the early stages of World War II, only 10 Type A vehicles were built and entered service, with a few surviving until 1945.
Daimler-Benz built a small number of Sd.Kfz.247/Bs on 4X4 heavy vehicle chassis, 58 of which were built in 1941-42.
