It entered service in the early 1980s. The M923 has an extremely robust structure and excellent off-road capabilities, which are necessary for ensuring the flow of materials to combat units on the front lines.
Numerous versions were produced on the basis of this chassis: Tow trucks, tankers, mobile maintenance and telecommunication vehicles.
The A1 version is characterized by its large off-road tires, which earned it the nickname "big-foot".
During its deployment, particularly in Iraq and Afghanistan, the "Big Foot" was often equipped with homemade protection devices to reduce the damage caused by light weapons fire.
This modification was done by crews "in the field".
