Developed after the war, with the first prototypes in 1947 to meet both civilian and military requirements.
Inspired by the American Jeep, it featured a 4x4 drive and a strong and reliable frame to successfully tackle the most difficult and demanding routes.
The aluminium body made it lighter, but at the same time more resistant to corrosion and more durable.
By 1971, when the Series III was introduced, more than a million had been produced for civilian and military use. The vehicle was available in 88 inch (inch) "standard wheelbase" or 109 inch "long wheelbase".
The 109 inch version was used by the British Special Air Service from the second half of the 1970s.
During operations in the desert, Land Rover was given a pink camouflage colour of rustproof paint and white to match the surroundings.
This is the reason for the nickname "Pinkie" given to it by the S.A.S. members.
