As the Allies gained air supremacy during World War II, the Wehrmacht needed to take appropriate defensive measures.
The existing anti-aircraft tanks were insufficient, so the design of an anti-aircraft tank based on the Panzer V Panther, designated the Coelian, was commissioned.
The tank was to house two 3.7 cm anti-aircraft guns in a closed turret. However, in May 1944, it was decided to use two 5.5 cm anti-aircraft guns instead of the 3.7 cm.
The Coelian never reached production. In February 1945, only a Panther chassis with a wooden model of the turret with a 3.7 cm anti-aircraft gun was presented.
