As the Luftwaffe lost its air superiority, Allied fighter-bombers proved an increasingly dangerous threat to the German Wehrmacht, and plans were developed to produce a mobile anti-aircraft self-propelled gun to protect ground units from air attack.
The Wirbelwind was based on the proven chassis of the Panzer IV and had a uniquely shaped open turret with 9 side walls.
Armed with a 20mm Flak-38 quad, it was capable of making life difficult for low-flying Allied aircraft that came within its range and providing direct fire support to ground troops.
Due to material shortages, production was hampered and there were never enough of these vehicles.
