Its chassis was developed by Porsche as part of the Tiger I design competition.
However, Porsche was so confident of its success that 100 examples of the chassis were completed before the end of the competition, but its proposal was not selected.
The obsolete chassis was converted into Elefant in 1942 on Hitler's orders - around 90 examples were built by May 1943.
With its armor plates up to 200mm thick and a powerful 8.8cm gun, it was an impressive tank hunter and served the German troops until the end of the Second World War.
