Before the start of World War II, the German Wehrmacht used a variety of vehicles in preparation for their use of Blitzkrieg tactics.
The "Schell" program of 1940, however, called for standardization of vehicles for more efficient production.
One of the vehicles selected for use was the Steyr 1500A/01. With its air-cooled 3.5-liter V8 engine and four-wheel drive, the vehicle proved successful, robust and reliable and was produced as a light truck, personnel carrier and staff car. Its versatility made it a useful transport vehicle on all fronts.
