It was the Red Army's heaviest field gun during the war.
The Br-5 mortar was an 11-inch (279.4 mm) calibre rifled mortar with a 14.2 calibre barrel and had the same tracked carriage as the 152 mm M1935 (Br-2) gun.
The mount allowed the gun to be transported over short distances at a speed of 5-8 km/h, for longer distances the barrel was removed from the mount and transported separately on a special wheeled carriage, the Br-10, at a speed of 25 km/h.
