The famous 75 mm Model 1897 field gun was manufactured at the foundry and arsenal in Bourges, the capital of the Cher department.
An important feature of the M. 1897 field gun was its hydropneumatic barrel brake, which absorbed most of the recoil and allowed the gun to be loaded, aimed and fired much more quickly than earlier guns, which had to be returned to their correct firing position by hand after each shot.
It was used by France, the United States, Poland, Belgium, Romania, Germany, the Finnish Wars (Boxer Rebellion), World War I, the Polish-Bolshevik War and World War II. Thousands of these reliable guns were rearmed in French service in 1938 and 1940, and many of them ended up in the German Wehrmacht and other Axis formations after the fall of France.
