It was produced in the 1950s to upgrade the Royal Armoured Corps units that continued to use the Cromwell tank in the early stages of the Cold War.
The vehicle itself was a modified Cromwell with a more powerful gun installed in a relatively lightly armoured two-man turret.
The Charioteer was only used to a limited extent by the British Army, but was used more frequently in other European and Middle Eastern countries.
