Merkava is a family of main battle tanks used by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).
Each tank has two roof-mounted 7.62 mm machine guns for use by the commander and loader, and another mounted coaxially with the main gun.
A 60 mm mortar is fitted for firing smoke grenades or suppressing dug-in infantry anti-tank teams.
It also has a remote-controlled .50 caliber M2 Browning heavy machine gun aimed at the main gun and controlled from the turret.
The Merkava III has a 120 mm IMI gun.
It entered service in December 1989.
