While the US Army had already been equipped with the M1 Abrams since the early 1980s, the US Marine Corps still relied on the tried-and-tested M60A1 tank.
In order to adapt it to the threats on the modern battlefield, the M60A1 underwent repeated combat upgrades. These included reactive armour. These tanks were also used by the Marines in the first Gulf War, Operation Desert Storm:
In early February 1991, 200 M60A1s of the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force (1MEF) crossed the border into Kuwait north of Khafji in Saudi Arabia. In the battle for Kuwait International Airport, they encountered an Iraqi force of T-54, T-55, T-62, Type-69 and T-72 tanks. The Marines won the battle, destroying around 100 Iraqi tanks with only one M60A1 lost (to anti-tank mines).
