Production of the heavy KV tanks with a 76 mm gun began in February 1940 at the Leningrad Kirov Plant (LKZ). By 1943, over 5000 KV-1s had been built.

A 600 hp diesel engine combined with a powerful universal cannon, which allowed firing at both enemy tanks and their field fortifications, artillery and troops, made it one of the most effective combat vehicles of its time.
