The Pzkpfw IV Ausf.F variant evolved from the Ausf. E model, with the early Ausf. F models still intended for infantry support and armed with the 75mm KwK 37 L/24 cannon (later these tanks were designated the F1 model). In March 1942, as a countermeasure to the Soviet and Allied main battle tanks, the Pzkpfw IV Ausf. F medium tank was significantly upgraded and equipped with the new 75 mm KwK 40 L/43 cannon. This variant was initially designated the Pzkpfw IV Ausf. F2 (later, after July 1942, all of these tanks were collectively referred to as the Pzkpfw IV Ausf. G model). Although this tank was originally designed as a stopgap measure, it was with it that the German military was able to take on the Soviet T-34 tanks.
These long-gun-equipped tanks formed the backbone of the Panzerwaffe from 1942 to 1943, achieving notable combat results on both the Eastern Front and the North African theater of war.
