Conceived by Bernard Montgomery, Operation Market Garden envisaged by using British, American and Polish airborne troops to bypass German defenses.
The paratroopers were to take control of bridges in the Netherlands between Eindhoven and Arnhem to secure the Allied forces' access routes into Germany.
However, strong German resistance and the Allies' failure to cross the Rhine jeopardized the operation and it failed.
The war dragged on, requiring months more of fighting before the Allies invaded Germany.
Hartenstein served as the center of activity during Operation Market Garden and was used as the headquarters for the British 1st Airborne Division.
