It was produced in 1944 as a modified M4A3 to meet the requirements of a heavily armored assault tank capable of supporting infantry on the European front in 1944.
Armor protection on the front and sides of the hull was increased to 101 mm and 76 mm, respectively.
The new cast turret had a circumference of 152.4 mm, a 178 mm thick gun shield and was equipped with a 75 mm M3 gun.
