In early 1942, Alkett was commissioned to design and produce a new Sturmpanzer in collaboration with Krupp. Alkett was responsible for the design of the inclined tank superstructure on which a 150 mm Sturmhaubitze would be mounted, which would be mounted on a standard Panzerkampfwagen IV chassis modified by Krupp. Since all previous vehicles, such as the Sturmhaubitze 42 (Sd.Kfz.142/2) and the Sturmpanzer 33, were only considered transitional models ("intermediate solution"), Albert Speer ordered the development of the Sturmpanzer IV. In fact, the Sturmpanzer 33 can be considered the direct predecessor of the Brummbar.
