This major offensive by the Soviet Red Army moved directly into the capital of the Third Reich after overcoming the German defensive lines on the Oder.
The city itself was defended by soldiers from the Wehrmacht, the Waffen SS, the Hitler Youth and the Volkssturm and was the scene of the last and fiercest clashes of the war.
The Soviet armed forces, led by Marshal Zukov and Marshal Konev, forced the surrender on May 2, 1945 with an overwhelming number of soldiers, vehicles and artillery.
The Red Army soldier raising the Soviet flag on the ruins of the Reichstag at the end of the Battle of Berlin is one of the most iconic images of World War II.
