Development of the Panzer III began in the mid-1930s with the aim of making it the backbone of the Wehrmacht's tank battalions alongside a smaller number of heavier tanks (Panzer IV).
Originally armed with a 3.7 cm cannon, the Panzer III quickly switched to a 5.0 cm cannon and in the improved versions (Ausf M and L) to the 75/24 gun with 64 rounds, which had already been used in the Panzer IV Use came. Production stopped in August 1943.
