The GAZ-66 is a Soviet and later Russian 4x4 off-road military truck manufactured by GAZ.
It was one of the most important transport vehicles for the Soviet Army's motorised infantry and is still used in the countries of the former Soviet Union.
Nearly one million vehicles of this type were built for both military and civilian purposes.
The GAZ-66 has achieved legendary status in many countries around the world due to its reliability, simplicity and off-road capability.
Production ceased in 1999 and the GAZ-3308 was produced instead.
The GAZ-66B version (1966) was produced on the basis of the GAZ-66 for use by air attack troops.
The main Soviet transport aircraft of the time were the An-8 and the An-12, and due to size limitations, the GAZ-66B was given a folding canvas cabin, removable doors and windscreen, a retractable steering wheel and attachment points to aid parachute drop and landing.
Based on the GAZ-66B, the TZ-2-66D tanker, the R-142D radio and command vehicle and the BM-21V MLRS with 9p125 launcher (12 tubes) were also developed.
Production was discontinued when the VVS received the larger IL-76.
