This large three-axle amphibious vehicle was developed for the American armed forces during World War II.
The goal was to build a vehicle that would deliver ammunition, food and materials stored in the holds of transport ships to attacking troops occupying beachheads on enemy soil immediately after landing.
The DUKW was able to move easily off-road, which, combined with its high loading capacity, enabled it to optimally fulfill its logistical task.
In the post-war years it was widely used by the US allies until the 1970s, including for disaster relief operations.
