From mid-1940 to April 1943, it collected intelligence, conducted reconnaissance forays and raids. However, at no point did the elite unit's strength rise to 350 men. To successfully traverse the desert sands, the LRDG used vehicles such as the Willys Jeep and other "stippled" trucks. The vehicle perhaps most associated with the LRDG is the two-wheeled patrol car. It entered service in March 1942 and became a mainstay of the LRDG.
The rugged, Canadian-made vehicles feature sand chutes, gas cans, a sun compass, sometimes a radio, an improved cooling system and low-pressure tires for the desert. They were equipped with weapons such as Lewis rifles, Vickers medium machine guns and the Vickers K.
