Often confused with the SLT 50 Elefant due to its external similarities, the Franziska is a completely independent vehicle.
The SaZgM FS 42.75/42 - the full name of the Franziska - was developed by Faun as a response to the 56t Leopard II, which could not be transported with the existing tank transporters.
For cost reasons, off-road capability was dispensed with and almost all commercially available components were used. In contrast to the SLT 50 Elefant, the second axle is not driven here, and "only" a 525 hp V12 diesel engine from KHD is used.
The SaZgM heavy is equipped with two cable winches, each with a pulling force of 18.6t, for recovering damaged vehicles. The total permissible weight of the Franziska is an impressive 39.7 tons.
In 2014, 20 Leopard 2s from Dutch stocks, which came back to Germany as replacements for the Leopard 2s leased from Germany to Canada, were completely overhauled and the new A7 equipment level was used to equip them. In addition to the mine protection features of the A6M version, this includes completely new features such as a combat compartment cooling system in the turret, a 17 kW auxiliary unit in the rear right side of the hull, additional armor on the lower sides of the hull in the combat compartment area, the optional Barracuda heat protection mat system, retrofitting the Attica thermal imaging module in the commander's optics and preparations on the hull for the use of additional side armor, an external intercom and a modified cable guide for the tow ropes.
