The development of the 57 mm ZiS-2 PaK was completed in 1940. It had a falling block breech, a spreading carriage with box spars and bulletproof sponge rubber tires. Its projectiles reached a muzzle velocity of 990 m/s for tank shells and 1,270 m/s for sub-caliber projectiles. At a combat distance of 500 meters, it could penetrate armor from 85 mm to 145 mm. However, the Soviet military initially gave preference to 45 mm anti-tank guns, so that the ZiS-2 was not mass-produced and used until around 1943. The ZiS-2 was also used by Warsaw Pact states after the Second World War until the 1980s.

The ZiS-3 was also designed in 1940 and was a 76.2 mm divisional field gun that used the same carriage as the ZiS-2. Originally developed as a field gun, it could also be used for direct aiming and became one of the best anti-tank guns of the Second World War with tank shells, so that it was hardly used in its actual role as a field gun. The German soldiers gave it the nickname "Ratsch-Bomm" because the firing and impact noises overlapped due to the high muzzle velocity and the short combat distance. Over 100,000 units were built.
