In fighter mode, the F/A-18 is primarily used as an escort aircraft and for fleet air defense; in attack mode, it is used for interdiction and close air support.
The F/A-18 demonstrated its capabilities and versatility during Operation Desert Storm, when it was able to shoot down enemy fighters and then bomb enemy targets in the same mission, breaking all records for tactical aircraft in terms of availability, reliability and maintainability.
The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) operated McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet fighter aircraft between 1984 and 2021.
Australia purchased 75 A and B variants of the F/A-18 in 1981 to replace the Dassault Mirage IIIs it had previously used.
